Blue Current is a home-based saltwater fish and coral business located in Edmonton, Alberta, built from the ground up by hobbyists who turned their obsession into a serious operation. What started as a few tanks and a love for reef life has grown into a major home-based reef venture focused on healthy livestock, honest advice, and a better experience for local marine keepers.

Blue Current is run out of a dedicated home reef space, not a storefront, which means every system is personally maintained and monitored every single day. Instead of balancing a retail floor and staff, the focus stays on water quality, fish health, and coral growth.

Behind the name is a commitment to doing things the right way: stable systems, consistent husbandry, and livestock that is eating and thriving before it ever leaves the door. Every fish and coral is treated as if it is going into a display tank at home, not just “inventory.”

Our Passion for the Hobby

Blue Current exists because of a genuine passion for saltwater aquariums, not because a market gap looked profitable on paper. Tanks were running long before there was a business name, and the focus has always been on learning, improving, and sharing that experience with other reefers.

There is real enjoyment in helping someone pick their first fish, build out a reef-safe stock list, or finally find that one coral that completes their scape. Time is spent researching, testing, and refining methods so that when advice is given, it comes from hands-on experience, not just a product label.

How We Care for Livestock

Livestock health sits at the centre of everything Blue Current does. Systems are designed around stability, appropriate stocking, and responsible sourcing. Fish are observed, fed, and monitored before being made available, and corals are given time to settle and color up instead of being rushed out the door.

When it comes to shipping, pure oxygen is used in bags, heat or cold packs are added as needed, and heavy-duty insulated boxes are used to help protect specimens during transit. The goal is always the same: reduce stress as much as possible so livestock arrives strong and ready to thrive.
